Part of this complete. . . .

meat and potatoes
pl.n. Informal (used with a sing. or pl. verb)
The fundamental parts or part; the basis.

I'm not sure when we started using this expression to the point it ended up defining something other than what it essentially was. But it's true, a steak and a big baked potato with sour cream, green onion and BACON is a fundamental part of my good weekend, as is some time at a gun range when I can.

I've had a lot of travel these last 5 months, including weekends, so shooting time has been limited for a while. But it will be savored when it happens. In addition to fish and game ranges which are awesome, I shoot at the occasional LEO range, where I always learn a lot from the range officers. But for this weekend, from a quiet schedule that turned into something else, it'll be just a few memories from a good day.

First a little warm up. I go EARLY, and in the winter and spring, can often see my breath before the sun gets up and high.
Now, off with the jacket, we're all warmed up. The P220 .45 . . . Ready. . .

Here we go. . . .

.45 recoil. And that's holding on to it with a strong grip. The glove? I've left that on to do a bunch of magazine loading, otherwise I tend to get a blister (darn fragile Celtic skin).

It shoots well though. Focus, sight picture, hitting center mass, that's all I'm going for. Hitting it with the target further out than I'm used, more out towards the grass, felt good though. And for dessert - a Ruger Bisley version of the super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum. YUM!
Guns and Ammo - Part of this complete weekend!

I hear you on the limited shooting time - I'm going to the range tomorrow for the first time in over a month (!!!)

However, I'm atoning for the paucity of shootie goodness - I'm bringing a new shooter with me...

:)

I lost the callus between the thumb and index finger during the winter. It's building back up nicely.

Try an UpLULA or find a strong-thumbed helper you can pay with meat and taters, Brigid.

I echo Jay G's comment about how long it's been ... but tomorrow I will rectify that. A daughter will come along, I hope.

Enjoy your time off, ma'am - I believe you've earned it.

If you have to load magazines while at the range, you don't have enough magazines :-(

If I interpreted correctly, sorry to hear that you've been called to work this weekend.

I'd gladly load magazines for you in return for meat and taters :-)

For those of us that don't know our "evil black guns" well what is that in the first range photo?

I have to echo Somerled's suggestion on the UpLULA. My wife and I love ours.

Have fun on the range.... Not to nit pick but why not a strong thumb forward grip?? Gripping higher and thumb forward will help with recoil mangagement. You must have big hands to get that much finger on your trigger on a 220.

And since its Memorial Day weekend its Fleet Week today.. the range on Sunday and a glass of Whiskey for the fallen on Monday.....

:-D

Really need to spend more range time this year. I've only been perhaps 3x since I've been back from Afghanistan in summer 07.

Steve, I've had the honor of shooting with our own Brigid, and even with my experience I would be loath to give her advice on her grip.

Every shooter needs to find their own best practice, as every professional shooter will profess. What works best for one, may not work at all for another.

The final judgment is in the results, and no matter what grip she chooses, I'd have Brigid at my back and never worry about her performance. I have seen her shoot, and seen her under pressure... and her skills in both situations are beyond question.

For the record I have VERY large hands, with long delicate fingers. In playing the piano I can easily span an octave and extra notes above that.

My grip works for me. Thanks C.

Having seen Brigids Shooty results, I would try to emulate her :) She is very good. She shoots better than I do when she is just "Going for Center Mass".

.22lr and 9mm shooty weekend for me.
For Memorial Day will be going to my wifes Dad's grave to plant a flag, he is a Korean War Vet. Remember the meaning of this Holiday!
