Blazing Brownies

Jim: Well, it got so that every piss-ant prairie punk who thought he could shoot a gun would ride into town to try out the Waco Kid. I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille. It got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word "draw" in my sleep. Then one day, I was just walking down the street when I heard a voice behind me say, "Reach for it, mister!" I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest saloon, crawled inside a whiskey bottle, and I've been there ever since.

I watched Blazing Saddles tonight. Always a good time.

Now, I rarely drink "hard" alcohol, preferring a cold beer after a day of work or an occasional glass of red wine. But I do have some on hand for recipes (such as bourbon sausage gravy, which is in the sidebar recipe column and bourbon gravy to go with turkey), and sometimes for "medicinal" purposes. But what about bourbon and chocolate? As in the form of brownies.

Bourbon has a complex and almost caramel-like sweetness, which heightens the flavors in desserts and makes plain vanilla and chocolate flavors just "pop". It adds a grown-up twist to a classic, the result of which is rich, moist and gooey.

Chocolate Bourbon Brownies.

After cooking, the bourbon isn't an obvious taste, but it lends it a depth of finish, a smoky sweet hint to the bittersweet chocolate that's added into the cooking chocolate. The chilling/sitting time in the recipe is important. The texture changes as the brownies chill. This also gives the bourbon flavor some time to develop, though it is very subtle.

I think I could crawl into these and not come out, but they are going to a coworker and his girlfriend, as a thank you for helping me with a house repair I needed extra hands for.

One of my favorite movies of all time, and a wonderful quote from it!

And I have a HORRENDOUS weakness for brownies - the lovely wife and I may have to try this recipe from it. Thanks as always miss.

What is on the top of this wonderful concoction?

Hard Stuff.....When a niece was going off to college we were having an advice fest with her, and I was asked to contribute. I told her to never drink hard liquor from the bottle. Always measure it out. Everyone laughed. When she became an RA in her dorm, my advice was part of her talk to new residents, along with, "If you do drink out of the bottle, you will be expected to clean up after yourself in the morning." I am sure it saved her at least one bad headache. I wish someone had warned me.

Ah, you prove my point. My point, in two words is... bribery works.

Hey, it doesn't always have be a negative. And even if they didn't know it was coming, next time they will, or something just as good. I'll bet that is where 'word of mouth' originated, with food, good food, and the sources.

Gah! You always make me hungry. I'm leaving, in part to sulk.

Nothing to say about the brownies-- though I see that *someone* will be asking for them soon--but wanted to let you know the new side bar picture is lethal. Think you just set all these boys howling for mercy!(It's twu, it's twu!)

I lean towards beer also. Sometimes an ounce or so of whiskey in a glass full of ice is nice however.

Hi Brigid,
Haven't had, or heard of Ezra Brooks in a long time. If I drink hard liquor it is almost always Scotch, an occasional margarita, and sometimes a shot or two of the good sipping tequila, with the obligatory salt, and lime. I wonder if Jack Daniels will do as well?

Yes, Blazing Saddles has joined the ranks of the classics. I especially like the segment that is a take off on "The Treasure of The Sierra Madre". "...badges! We don't need no stinking badges."

Your picture in the margin is fabulous! Talk about curves in all of the right places, and a non anorexic body! And Dori, you are right. But can you enlighten me on what "twu" means. Don't use a lot of the texting short hand, and I am not familiar with that one. That picture confirms what I had already figured out for myself, and that is, as I have said, you are "drop dead gorgeous." Like you almost all of the "black tie" events I have had to attend were more a result of some duty, or obligation, but now that I look back on those occasions, the majority of them bring back pleasant memories. I'll bet you can say the same, no?

And a model to boot. Just when I thought you couldn't get any better.

Pleasant dreams, and a pat for Barkley.

I prefer a good stout or porter myself...but on rare occasion I indulge in a bit of Irish Whiskey. I'm a Jameson's guy...but I prefer Red Breast...but at 50 bucks a bottle...it is even rarer than I'd like...=)
The brownies look awesome too. MMMMMM...gooooodddd!

The sheriff is... near! I'm still amazed that Blazing Saddles got into theaters in the first place, but it is a funny, funny movie.

Those brownies look delicious, a credit to your skill not only with the oven but with a camera, also.

That dress you're wearing the photo on the sidebar puts me in the same frame of mind as when I see some of Oleg's photography: The combination of a striking model and a talented photographer is an incredible, sublime thing.

The uncut version of Blazing Saddles is a top 5 all time movie for me.

Oh my those sound yummy. Not that I need chocolate, and my heart goes whacky when I have alcohol, but if it's baked it should be o.k., right?

Ma'am,

I can empathize with your plight as that photo caused me to suffer sympathetic asphyxiation.

And then you give us another recipe that challenges my boyish figure. ;-)

Mrs. Roscoe has a corset collection which includes one from the UK with embedded steel plates and a very authentic bunny waitress costume.

They're fun as long as you're not the person with pre-event lacing duty (one guess as to who that is at our house).

The photo I like the best, though, is the eyes. Those lovely green eyes look like they have seen more than their share of both beauty and pain. And yet, they only reflect the beauty from within.

Your prose, poetry, artistry, and cooking all reflect a deep and abiding passion for things of beauty. Whether it is a critique of a piece of finely tooled machinery, or a description of a quiet, misty morning, you write so eloquently that we get to enjoy every sense you describe as if we were there too.

Thank you for sharing that passion with your readers. I consider myself lucky to have found your blog and I treasure everything I have found here.

All the best,

Newbius
