I HAVE THIS UNEXPLAINED URGE TO MAKE. . .

I'm home, very tired and very cold. What to make that's easy, budget minded, and delicious on a late day when it's so cold even the Democrats have their hands in their own pockets?
The French called it "pain perdu", or lost bread. It is known in England as the poor knights of Windsor, "fattiga riddare" in Sweden; "arme ridder" in Danish; and "armer ritter" in German.

It was served for breakfast, as well as for an evening dessert, sometimes served by the less than wealthy to the visiting knight with simple jam. Tonight, with the temperatures falling into the low single digits, not even considering the wind chill, it will be dinner, with a side of fresh venison sausage. A treat for me and my knight with a tail.

HOTR Cinnamon French Toast. Freshly sliced homemade bread, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup whole milk, half a capful of Pure Vanilla, two pinches of sugar and several shakes of Penzey's Vietnamese Cinnamon. The cinnamon really adds something, darkening the bread without burning it, lending a crisp savory bite to the tender pieces of bread. Served with just a dab of butter and a little pure maple syrup drizzled over both lost bread and lost venison. (??) . . . "hey where did the sausages go? They were right here on the plate. . . . ."

On a cold day anything that gets the oven fired-up and adds some extra heat is a good thing. I'm cooking chicken thighs in a butter-curry sauce with peas and diced potato...

We have a restaurant here in town that has been featured on Food Channel's Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins (or whatever it's called; Guy Fierri hosts it), their French Toast (made with Jewish Challah bread) is out of this world. I use Challah myself, or King's Hawaiian Bread.

That thar grub looks mighty tasty ma'am. I do all the cooking around here and sometimes I just don't feel like a big production. That usually means breakfast for dinner. What's with the Penzey's? I notice that you use alot of different Penzey's stuff. I've never seen or heard of it. I'm going to have to go look online. Hope you are your White Knight in blackface stay warm and cozy. 72 chilling degrees here today. Yes, that is a big tongue sticking out at all you midwestern eskimos.

It is obvious from Barkley's innocent look that he has no knowledge of the purloined sausages.
I've seen that look before on my Yellow Lab "Crackers".

The sausages may have been confiscated by alien beings with whom he battled valiantly before being laid low by cosmic stun ray. Give him a little credit!

After reading this yesterday there was only one thing I wanted for dinner last night.

Yep. French toast. Never tried it with vanilla before, but that was mighty tasty adding that in. I didn't have the Vietnamese cinnamon, so I simply added extra of the normal stuff.

Darned tasty.

Thanks Brigid

That looked so good I talked my wife out of Happy Meals and personally made French Toast for the eight of us. It always looked easier when my wife made it! Thanks for the great idea!

I tried something I have to share. Inspired by your egg nog pancakes. I had slightly old french boule from WF (fav french toast fodder). I got their "home made egg nog" which is about as good as the type you recommended. I used:

3 eggs
~1 cup of egg nog

for the french toast. It came out GREAT! Didn't need cinnamon nor vanilla extra.

Try it!
