There is a part of it that is as simple as self protection. As was my Dad in the Air Force, my Mom was a Law Enforcement Officer, a Sheriff, and I heard firsthand the abuses she saw against other women in the course of her work, women for whom their only crime was to be small and timid against a raging bully. Women who had yet to learn that evil does not go away by submitting, but by fighting back. So she and Dad taught me to shoot and the reasons for which they did needed no voice. Individually, collectively I believe it's a right of mine, as a law abiding citizen, whether I am a LEO or not, male or female, large or small. That being the right to protect my body and my interests for which I've toiled. And I would defend with each breath, against any interference with that liberty on which our country was founded. The Founding Fathers did not give us that right, they simply affirmed us that right, one over our own bodies and minds that was God given long ago. But with the right comes obligation and responsibility. Our country was not founded on the principle that government would take care of our every need, including protecting us at every instance. To have the law enforcement power to achieve that alludes to an Orwellian world I would not wish to live in. I carry because I am empowered with not just the right, but the duty to take care of myself. I am sovereign in my protection of myself, charged with that moral duty and supported by the Second Amendment and the steady hand that holds the grip. It is a decision that I alone make, to carry responsibly, to be proficient, to be sure. I can no more imagine giving that up, than the sibilant intake of breath as I squeeze the trigger.
Then there is simply the sheer love I have for that which is history, of the acts of courage that defined a persons freedom, of the mechanical workings of objects which support self sufficiency and strength. Planes, trains, steam engines, old tools, and yes, the gun. There's an attraction to old tools and old machines, the human values they represent. Nothing that withstands history gets built without brilliance of design, a laboring effort and the dreams of man. Some say a gun is a killing instrument. Man is a killing instrument. The gun is only a tool, from which we have the pure mechanical force which can keep one alive or take a life. As a tool it is as weak or as strong as he or she who hold its, as good or as bad as the collective soul that keeps it in working order. The guns I own are defenders of good, soldier's weapons, officer's weapons, my weapons.
As a female, I am by some cultures considered weak, yet my will to survive is born out by a life that most would have shied away from. That strength, that utter potency of the will to live is instilled in some things more than others, and in my weapons I can feel it. Taking that, holding one in my hand, feeling the power and the recoil shudder through me is empowering. Using my own will and ability to place the precision of liberty onto a small piece of paper, it's history. That of the past, that of my continued future.
I support the Second Amendment as it supports what our country was founded on, the means in which as patriots, we can protect and defend. The true measure of the patriot is steadfastness. We all have small moments of wanderlust in us, tearing off on paths that others may not follow, testing limits, testing ourselves. That is the nature of man. Yet when we strive to hold true, to stand firm to our beliefs as free men and women, as a group, to carry our weapons and defend our land and our homes, the weak become strong, and the wandering hold together as one. For then we are united in something much greater than the elemental whims of mankind. Together as patriots we are much more of the courageous and less of the selfish, we become brothers in arms, one household at a time.

We don't always agree, but on this point we do. Until the men of this world cease to beat their women up, this will be one reason I believe EVERY woman should take up some means of defending herself, whether that be martial arts, or a gun. And until people quit hurting and killing people, us law abiding citizens, as you said, have a right - and a moral obligation at least - to defend themselves and their families from said thugs. I spent several years in Cincinnati, a rough town on it's own. There were a few months where I was all alone, but my bf, in his infinite wisdom, left me his choice piece should it come to that. I never had to use it, but I did once have to let the world outside my apt. door know I had means to defend myself. Sometimes the great thing about having a weapon isn't the ability to use it, but the deterrent factor.
So thank you for such an elloquently written piece, and remember even if there aren't any comments, you still have readers! ;-)
Well said.
I would also add it is our responsibility to defend those who are weaker and more helpless, such as children, the old lady next door, the handicapped. Just an addition, not a repudiation to your post. Get well soon!
I agree with you 100% ..We have the right to defend ourselves and our family...Also Lynx217 made a good point..I have read your pieces for weeks now..I may not always comment..But I do enjoy reading them..Thank You
Self defense is more than mere possession of a gun; It is a mentality, even a philosophy. One can be stark naked, yet still be capable of defending life and liberty. Conversely, all the weapons in the world will not compensate for a servile mentality.
Amen.
If I ever have the opportunity to have to joy of raising my own daughters, and they have proven to me that they are neither intemperate in nature, nor impulsive in action, and have no desire to dominate another human being, they will be instilled by me to have a concealed and carry license and to wear a weapon when they go out with friends.
I have read too many stories of some sweet young woman having her life taken from her by some narcissistic and perverse sociopaths in our society.
Very well said Brigid, and I hope you are feeling better.
Well said!
Better to be one of the sheepdogs rather than one of the sheep.

Well said. Remember that the MacDonald decision is just another step in restoring rights. There is still much more work to do.
I hope you're feeling better today.
Beautifully said! Now I hope that those of us in Illinois will be allowed to carry. Chicago shouldn't be able to call the tune for the rest of us.
B,
as usual, i am in agreeance with so much of your passion for this issue.
however, you articulated a feeling that previously was left undefined for me, but one that is very accurate about shooting and guns themselves: the sense of a kind of Will to Power... the potential, the capacity that is implied by the tool, and the action of using one, even in practice.
indeed, it seems so obvious now, but it has always been so primal and visceral to me, without words. thank you for giving this woman the way to voice the peace that a gun can bring. truly. were that more women understood.
p.s. feel better soon!
Great post. Your heart is very much in tune with many who cannot express the word in writing the way you do. Thank you for being bold enough to write and speak your heart. We are all the better because of it.
Continued prayer for healing, strength, and wisdom.
Still, there are some women who don't believe they need to be armed and proficient. Mrs. Crucis is proficient and likes my wheel guns. I bought her a snubbie like mine for Christmas last year. But---she doesn't think she needs a CCW. In Missouri, she can carry a loaded weapon in her car regardless if she has CCW or not.
Still, she won't carry even though she teaches at night in KC. Some of her students will walk her to her car at the end of class but that doesn't always happen.
Mayor Daley of course has said they will create a new anti-gun law as soon as possible because we are a "Nation of Laws, not a Nation of Guns" What a freakin a-hole.
I've been in law enforcement in a mid-western county for 36 years. After countless domestic cases, I often said that if a female walks into a gun shop, she should be able to purchase without having to submit to _any_ government red tape. When asked about that belief, I just say that every 28 days, a whole lotta men would be really, really polite. Really.
Well wrote. I'm planning on open carrying all the time, as soon as I hit 18. Now I just open carry as much as I can legally on our private property.
Add my total agreement to your words. I am a woman, I carry a concealed pistol most every place I go. The only thing I'd add to your comments - if you are going to carry, then please get proper training and then practice on a routine basis. I not only support, but I encourage, any law abiding, mentally stable person (especially women)to get a firearm and be ready to use it.
My wife was very anti-gun when we met. One of the happiest events in the last year was when she came to me and said she wanted to get her concealed carry permit and to learn to shoot.
She now carries everywhere and is getting to be a pretty good shot... even if her glock is pink...
Well said indeed.
The next time some arrogant, naïve, leftist extremist sonofabeech tells me that people with guns and gun permits are only trying to be “macho”, I’ll refer him to a blog of certain lady I read that wants to be ”bent like Gumby and can tell you which handgun loads for bear should be considered; and then I'll tell him to report back to me…
Being an old buzzard I can rember when I carried what ever I wanted to and no need for any permits. A 10 ga in the rear window or 06 and nobody bothered it for under the seat or in the pocket was the .38 or 44/40.
As a youngster I could walk into the store and get a box of .22's for rabbit hunting or tin cans, no questions no permits no paper work.
I understand what freedom was, I also understand what responsibility is. But big brother does not consider me capable of making good decisions so all these gun laws have been passed.
Here in lies my pet peeve with the republican party, they allowed the anti-gun liberals to pass laws restriciting freedom of choice. Freedom of choice is what this country used to be about yet the republicans allowed the gun laws to be passed. these are thewolves in sheeps clothing because to get these laws passed the liberals had to have some help.
right now the NRA is in hit water because of the deal they carved out with the liuberals on free speech and apparently the NRA has put a muzzle on their board to not talk about the second amendment at the Kagan hearings.
We so often blast the liberals, that we foerget to look at who is enabling them.
Having weapons at home was one of the key ingeredients during the revolutionary war. Without weapons the Kings army would of overrun so many pioneers in the hinterlands. The second amendment is about being able to defend self from the tyrany of government despots..... I emphaize... government despots.
Laws need to start being passed repealing the oppresive laws of the past century.
Now where's my .06.
Very well written, very, very well said.
Carteach0 - Thank you. You write of such things as deeply and that means a lot. Thanks as well, for the note when Mom died. I meant a lot to me and the family.
The government only has authority and legitimacy because that is what the people believe.
If this is how you write when you've got pneumonia... I kid. :) I hope you're feeling better today than yesterday.

I was a police officer in Monterey, california. A pretty liberal town. I taught the Citizens Academy for 4 years. When I taught the use of force module I used a simple technique to drive home your point Brigid.
I held up a variety of implements from a handgun to a machete to a folding knife to a screwdriver, etc. and asked if each was a deadly weapon. Most generally agreed that they were, at least after some discussion. Then I had the smallest and oldest female come up and stand beside me. At the time I was 6 foot and 265 pounds. I'm a weightlifter and had the physique that goes with it. I asked if I was a potentially life threatening weapon when compared with her all by myself. If I decided I wanted to harm or kill her with my bare hands could I? The discussion was usually lively but you could see the dots being connected. By the time we were done everyone in the class had a new understanding how force can be imposed of the physically weak and what a deadly weapon truly was. I can't say I won over any converts to the side of gun rights for everyone but at least I made them think about it.
Lu and I are sending you healing thoughts Brigid.
It dismays me though, to see that four of the Supremes dissented with this decision.
Tyranny is alive and well in the Leftist ranks.
Lorimore, that why blocking Kagan is so important. It isn't that she's a leftie and statist replacing a leftie and statist. It the opinions she'll write in the future when it comes her turn. Remember, the judges take turns writing the court opinions. What is said can make a vital difference---and that is were the danger lies.
Brigid, glad to see you're doing better.
Shhhhh...listen closely..If you put your hand to your ear, I'm sure you will be able to hear me slamming my fist on the table and barking "DAMN RIGHT!!!" almost every time I read one of your posts.
I just want to add onto my comment that there does need to be gun laws out there: to keep the wife beaters, mentally incompetent, and the like away from guns. I also don't believe there's a need for ANYONE to have an ak47 unless you're in the military or law enforcement. A well-placed shot by a pistol will incapacitate if not outright kill anyone. There is logic to concealed carry too - the criminals will never know who has and doesn't have the firearm, and so robbing someone just got a lot more tricky for them. It doesn't always works, but it's a good deterrent. As a wee left-leaning independent, I see both sides. All I ask for is common sense. Don't touch my 2nd amendment unless you got good reason to! I reserve the right to bite - or obliterate - your hand for getting too close! LOL
Lynx217 - as always thanks for reasoned discourse, something I'm lucky to have here on this blog.
As to the AK47 issue, we may disagree but I'll explain why I feel as I do about it.
The right to have a weapon should not dictate what TYPE of weapon. The people that I know that shoot such things, are as stable, family loving and careful as anyone you'd ever meet. Many ARE LEO's. They shoot them, like I do. It's a challenge, to learn something different, with different operating procedures, with a challenge of use. None of us expect to use one to kill someone. But the sheer exhilaration of being in control, responsible and focused control of a firearm like that is about a lot more than the weapon. It's not ego, it's not testosterone (which I'm a little on the shy side of). It's taking your basic skills to the next level.
I know may people who have drivers licenses that have no business driving a huge SUV alone, let alone while talking on their cell phone. Poor skills, a lack of responsibility, and lack of focused CAN kill, be it vehicle or firearm. Should I say - you're 80 years old or 18 years old or you have an IQ 0f 90, YOU need to only drive a small sedan?
No.
Again, MY opinion, and I don't wish to start a long winded discourse, as frankly I'm still pooped from the hospital visit. just trying to say why I believe such things.
Thanks again, for keeping an open mind here. We ALL learn from each other's reasoning.
Well, Brigid, until we start stiffening the penalties for murder and attempted murder, it is our best option. So many thugs spend less time in prison for killing people than drug users who didn't hurt anyone (except perhaps themselves). That's my whole reasoning.
Hugs! And btw... take the weekend off, take a nice soak, and turn off all your electronics. Maybe get someone else to cook for you even? You deserve to relax!
