Treasures From the Desert

While I'm in "what time zone is this", a little something different for you all.I don't own a ton of jewelry, as some women do. My daughter M. (otherwise known as Brigid Jr, occassionally has bought me a beautiful necklace which I wear with pride. But of the pieces I like to wear, most of it is Southwest in design, color and style (I pretty much live in Denim or black).

This beautiful and unique Handcrafted Jewelry From the Desert is made and sold by the Mom of one of my favorite people in the world, my friend and confidant Shannon. A woman I call my sister, even though we're related by friendship, not blood.

I grinned when I saw her Mom's online name, Desert Hippie, because this is a woman who loves Dogs, Bacon and Guns, as does her daughter. Not exactly like the hippies I remember from childhood. But, like her daughter, she is one of those beautiful and creative women, close to the earth, who sees the beauty in simple things. Her work includes glass, natural and dyed stone, quality metals, shell, freshwater pearls, crystal, enamel, bone (yes my favorite), and wood, sometimes interwoven in with pieces of recycled vintage jewelry. All unique, and intended to be bold, fun and extremely affordable. I love mine.

Click on the photos for the color and detail and click on the link above to see more and order. The pieces pictured may have already been snapped up, but she has some really beautiful pieces on her website.
Then put down your black rifle, gather your family around and fry up some bacon. She'd be pleased.

When I lived in Santa Fe there was a character there that had just been rescued from a forest fire and went on to national fame to help prevent forest fires. They had put him in a small room in one of the buildings just off the plaza at Santa Fe.
At that time it was only Indians that could sell their wares at the Governor's Plaza. It was all hand made jewelry and pottery. Today at the market any one can sell their wares. I would ask where it was made... the response Mexico, Mexican Indians in a sweat factory.

Things have changed for that was one of the treats was to talk with the Indian about their craft. Now it is just another side walk vendor.

So to be able to see the work of a person first hand and talk with them has to be a treat.

Some years later I was able to get a Navajo sand cast Squash Blossom necklace of sterling silver and turquoise through bartering. The X has it and today a value of over 5K.

There is something about the Southwest that brings out creative juices for some and the work they create there is terrific.

thx

Brigid - Mom was touched so deeply by your kindness, I could swear I saw her eyes glistening. She was literally without words. Thank you so much for a wonderful tribute!

@John - I hear what you're saying. Even today in Native culture, it seems that the pieces are being tramped out by the pot full with less care and consideration than back in the day. Newer jewelry has a glossy shine that the older sandcast and stampings shunned. We recently acquired a few vintage pieces that represent the devotion that was incorporated into Native jewelry when the art was truly a labor of love...not worth thousands, but valuable nonetheless (although eBay shoppers are not feeling that way!). Once in a while, a piece comes to me that I just cannot let go of - I may never wear it, but that doesn't mean I want to release it either...it is an honor to touch such history!
