When Trouble Brews

Starbucks not only supported open carry in their stores, they send a BUNCH of coffee overseas to help supply troops and the brave men and women who work hard to protect and defend. Despite an internet rumor that had no basis in fact, Starbucks is a huge supporter of those who serve. In 2009 alone they sent, over 71,000 pounds of coffee to be distrubuted through the USO in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq. In 2010, to get more of the coffee in the field, they sent 770,000 3 packs of their ready brew to the USO to be put in care packages targeted for those who may not have received their coffee otherwise.

I remember that when I'm going to spend my money for a breakfast pastry or something to drink. Whether you prefer their coffee to others or not, it's nice to support a company like that.

Especially for people like Albert.

Best to you my friend. We're keeping the coffee on for you til you make it home safely.

I saw lots of their coffee in Iraq, but I couldn't drink any of it. I am limited to decaf. Mostly the HQs took their cut and very little made its way out to the troops. Oddly enough, the AFEES (PX) concession for coffee and coffee-like drinks was not Starbucks (green beanery or some similar sounding name). They had never heard of decaf. Mostly run by Pakistanis. They could not understand the concept of coffee with no caffeine.

We need to support our troops in any way shape or form instead of sticking our heads in the sand. Be proud of who you are, an AMERICAN.

Whitetail Woods Blog / Deer Hunting and Blackpowder Shooting at it’s best.

I remember Starbucks at one time having a promotion where for every pound of coffee purchased they would donate a pound to the troops. Good to see that they're continuing their support. I wonder if Starbucks has a way we as consumers can contribute to their efforts?

The AAFES/MWR coffee shop is "Green Beans". They have a program called "Give a cup of Joe to a Joe" where you can anonymously gift a cup of coffee to a deployed soldier.

Their Via instant, BTW, is pretty darned good--for instant, at least. It is available in Unleaded as well as two grades of leaded.
(It also comes in frou-frou flavored format, which, come to think of it, would probably appeal to the pogues, this ensuring that the warriors get Real Coffee...)

Now, DW, I'm a proud pogue, and I enjoy my skim, no foam, half calf vanilla cappuccino as much as the next guy, but that flavored Via stuff is still too sweet. ;-) Maybe for the Air Force guys, though.

I may be compelled to reconsider my attitude toward Starbucks. Who knows what they've done since I was in one last?

I was on a sub from '04-'08 and I remember how valiantly we mechanics struggled to steal the Starbucks from the cooks and supply guys. That stuff was GREAT! Beat the pants off the 35 lb. tins of caffeinated chicory that got passed off for coffee if you couldn't acquisition yourself some Starbucks. Vacuum sealed, too, so it never reeked of bilge and amine :D

Here in Eugene, Oregon, recently, a Dutch Brothers Coffee employee shot and killed an armed robber in the kiosk.

The owner of the company's response? He gave the guy a month off with pay! I'll definitely be shopping with them in the future. What a pleasant change from the usual story.
