Real vs. Imitation

Readers - a brief comparative example.

REAL Blueberry

IMITATION Blueberry

I'm starting to get my appetite back; that means I'm on the mend which is a positive. So, for tonight, a food post. I really like some of the Jiffy brand products. The Jiffy brand general baking mix and their pancake/waffle mixes are really good. It's as good or better than Bisquick and usually half the price. It also will store for quite a while packaged properly. Their corn muffin mix is one of the best inexpensive mixes out there, especially if you mix two boxes and bake it in a cast iron skillet. Still I prefer to make my own cornbread as I do most bread products.

Face it, I like bread products. That's why I never did well on the Atkins diet. After a week of that I was so weak and shaky that I would have handed over my purse to a mugger armed only with a maple roll. But I'd rather do without than eat something called "wonder" bread, or most pre-made food and I'm not a fan of prepackaged dry sweet rolls which are more dwarfin assault scones than a breakfast roll. Yet, I was thinking that there are times some dry food mixes might come in handy, for camping or such things and I am always one to try different products.

So it was that I bought a box of Jiffy blueberry muffin mix with these enticing words on the label:

"Artificially flavored with imitation blueberries".

Just how to you artificially flavor something that is already imitation? And just what are "imitation blueberries"? Are they grown in a secret lab?

From the size and shape they appeared to be tiny, dry ball bearings painted navy blue. They were small and tasteless but they made up for it by their being few in number. When baked, the result looked like this. I'm sure there's some little imitation blueberries in there somewhere.

Compared to my regular blueberry muffins they tasted like a Styrofoam coffee cup. An artificially flavored Styrofoam coffee cup, but I'm spoiled in the baking department. But I don't waste food so I'll freeze them. They might come in handy next time I wish to lob some skeet.

Back to the drawing board. I always freeze and can lots of berries in the summer. So let's start over. Blueberry Muffins. I posted the recipe a year or so ago, and which were tested in the field by BK and a couple other readers.

Sometimes you want the real thing, not some puny blue Yankee imitation.

When I was a youngster, Jiffy blueberry muffin mix was my all time favorite replacement for when I ran out of mixes for my Easy Bake Oven. I remember loving that the blueberries were 'crunchy.' Hee hee...kids will eat anything fake, won't they?

Glad to see you're up and about. We keep several of those muffin mixes around for camping and such, but nothing beats honest to goodness blueberry muffins made from scratch.

All this and a sense of ha-ha? I'll be over here, swooning.

Jiffy corn muffin mix makes the best dern pancakes you could ask for. I've been eating them for at least 50 years now.

Great to hear you're feeling better, enough for porn (FOOD porn)! I had a fast-food mall pizza once. Was asked how it was. I replied, "It was greasy and tasteless, but, it was expensive."
Damn, now I want a blueberry muffin (or 3.
Keep taking good care.

Glad to hear the apetite is returning. Sorry the only thing around to satisfiy it was a mix (although I'm in the camp that likes Jiffy cornbread, in a pinch). Still have some frozen blueberries here for scones or a crumble. After looking at your muffin recipe, I may have to give that a try. Take care and get well.

Carol - the muffin recipe is worth making. I got great reviews back from it from szeveral readers.

Bob - Thanks again to you and your wife for the notes.

Grossters - welcome! Is the recipe for the corn cakes on the box? or do you have any instructions for me. I love corncakes.

Shannonn - I hadn't seen your comment before we chatted on the phone. Crunchy. I bet.

Glad to hear your feeling better. Thinking I could really hunt some coyotes from that imitation blueberry thingy. Although riding shotgun from a piper is hard to beat.

I'm so glad to know you're feeling better, Brigid. Blogland just isn't the same without ya!

I do like the Atkins diet, but I agonize almost every morning about how to 'spend' my daily allotment of 30 carbs. Most days, i spend it 1 or 2 grams at a time on a salad dressing, or a few bites of a starchy vegetable. But SOME DAYS ...well, you just gotta have chocolate! I try to limit my chocolate days, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta DO!

: )

That blueberry muffin recipe is a favorite in my house.

Glad to hear you are up and moving. Hope things continue to mend well!

Atkins... spittewy. Paleo and no they are not the same.

Bread.... sigh. Oh well, I do cheat ever once in a while. I just don't make it the back bone of my diet.

Can't keep a good woman down. What kind of plane is that? Have you flown that one and I wonder if one of those small engines can keep it up in the air - if needed? Take care.

Thanks for the update. We're thrilled that you're getting back to normal. Hope your local friends are bringing food, and helping you out.

Get well soon!

Ed - I'm assuming you mean the second one?

In three phrases

Designed by the French
Homebuilt
Powered by Chain Saw Engines.

In a word. No. Not just no, Hell no.

I am not a big fan of chain saw engines on something hurtling me through the sky at 100 mph. The following recitation from the manufacturer's operating manual: Danger!: This engine, by its design, is subject to sudden stoppage! Engine stoppage can result in crash landings. Such crash landings can lead to serious bodily injury or death. Never fly the aircraft equipped with this engine at locations, airspeeds, altitudes, or other circumstances from which a successful no-power landing cannot be made, after sudden engine stoppage.

Call me a wimp, but I just can't get my head wrapped around the idea of hauling aloft something that the engine maker says is subject to packing it in and killing me, straight out, in writing, complete with exclamation points.

Though, come to think of it, I knew a couple CF700 engines that wanted to kill me too. . . .

Aanoosh - I'm sort of fending for myself food wise, but I'm not exactly going to starve around here :-)

Blueberry muffins....yuummm

My favorite!

Your recipe for them is the best, but in a pinch (hunting, camping, packing) Krusteaz does a pretty good jog with their mix.

Glad you are feeling better and the prayers keep commin'.

My thought was some people will fly just about anything to get into the air. Maybe it requires a warning like "Approaching this airplane with intent to fly will cause immediate cancellation of all health and medical insurance policies."

Huh. If you were nearby I'd be keeping you well fed. Must be my maternal side.

I'd be bringing full meals. What would be your favorite?

the cricri is not so much an airplane, as a transport system for delivering the victim to the scene of the crash. Fun to watch someone else fly!

Keep us posted. I myself like a little bean soup with my cornbread, but those birds in Arkansas didn't appreciate it when I ate that.

Favorite clip of the series:

The boys get a movie-length story on Disney Channel this summer. Keep an eye out if you're a fan.

Hey, the Cri-Cri has its place, and its own joys! But the image is certainly giggle-worthy. Have you heard about the electric cri-cri coming out? Supposed to be nearly as quiet as a glider, removing the noise between you and the sky...

Glad to hear you're feeling better, and hope you enjoy some real blueberry muffins. :-)

Jim said...

Whim - Judging by the description of their engines, they're all potentially quiet as gliders! :P

I like the Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. Take two, add in half a can of cream corn, and bake and extra 10-15 minutes (using a cast iron skillet, not a muffin tin). Good eats!

Ok,Ok....I'll take the chainsaw engines back....and I guess I'll take the rubberbands back too.

Thanks for linking to me, I somehow missed this post. Yes, the muffins are amazing! I need to try my hand at some food photography so maybe I will just have to make some today :)

Fake blueberries suck, but you have to admit that the cri-cri is a cute lil' airplane...probably fit about 200 of those into that Galaxy.
