Between Rocks and Hard Places

Not only does the English Language borrow words from other languages, it sometimes chases them down dark alleys, hits them over the head, and goes through their pockets. From other anonymous and well known sources, a few of my favorite sayings, words of wisdom and bullet points.

"A slipping gear could let your M203 grenade launcher fire when you least expect it. That would make you quite unpopular in what's left of your unit." - In the August 1993 issue, page 9, of PS magazine, the Army's magazine of preventive maintenance.

All parts should go together without forcing. You must remember that the parts you are reassembling were disassembled by you. Therefore, if you can't get them together again, there must be a reason. By all means, do not use a hammer. -- IBM maintenance manual,1925.

The client is trying to kill you, the client is trying to kill himself and the client is trying to kill the rest of the clients." — The 3 rules of mountain guiding.

"The cure for everything is salt water: Sweat, tears, or the sea." - unknown

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." — Frank Herbert's Dune.

"I've got a firm policy on gun control. If there's a gun around, I want to be the one controlling it." - Clint Eastwood

"They say miracles are past; and we have our philosophical persons, to make modern and familiar, things supernatural and causeless. Hence is it that we make trifles of terrors, ensconcing ourselves into seeming knowledge, when we should submit ourselves to an unknown fear." — William Shakespeare, All's Well that Ends Well, Act II Scene III.

"A ship in harbor is safe - but that's not what ships are for." - John A. Shedd

"I don't think I'm cut out to be a civilian pilot. When they ask what is the most important instrument in the cockpit I always say "rounds remaining." - Brigid

Pretty much expect to have one of three reactions when reading Brigid - a tear, hunger pangs, or a BIG WIDE GRIN!!!

Do you know a cure for me?
Why yes, he said, I know a cure for everything. Salt water.
Salt water? I asked him.
Yes, he said, in one form or another, sweat, tears or the salt sea.

A favorite of mine:

“I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown,’ and he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a light and safer than a known way.”

(M.L. Harkins, 1875-1957, quoted by King George VI, 1 January 1940)

Thanks for the smiles.

Feeling stressed out on our homestead, debating whether or not to relocate. I like living in a concrete bunker, and given the current economic climate, it's probably the best place to be. Alas, the appropriate job is not currently in easy range. Sometimes reality bites.

In my non-professional opinion as an owner of an XD, thats an XD in either 9mm or .40 with a 4 inch barrel. From experience, the .45 is just notably bigger, even in pictures BK.

Nice list Brigid. I'd add this one from a checklist I saw somewhere quite some time ago, and then saw turned into a cartoon:

-Visually verify the majority of the air in your fuel tanks has been removed

Which was paired with a placard we once tacked up in the DC-3 I used to wander around in.

-When all the fuel in the tanks is replaced by air, the engines will quit. Use the stick. (A suction dipstick we used to visually check fuel levels, marked off in gallons. We had a good set of gages, but it was a practice I heartily recommend.)

BK - sorry, yesterday got really busy and couldn't respond. There's both the 9mm and 40 around the house. That's the one I did the post on last year, which I think was the .40. (the picture was from that post). I'm thinking of getting the .45 but wanted one in green and stainless and they're harder to find.

Thanks for the grins this morning - I love that you quoted Frank Herbert - that is always my mantra when starting something I have reservations about or just plain scares me silly.
Glad the move has gone well - I do not envy the process at all.

I have the sub-compact .40, which is a LOT smaller than my dad's .45. His is the green/tan I believe... I haven't seen a stainless/green one yet! Just curious, since I spend Sunday afternoon photographing mine.

DUH--my dad always said that firing his (8) .50-cals from his P-47 in WWII was like "slamming on some brakes---the recoil could have torn the wings off of a lesser plane..................."

Left The Local Gun Show with a pair of Glocks (sorry.......)

It is amazing what happens when you say to a dealer: "'kay fine, I want one of this and one of that and I have cash and you are NOT the only Glock dealer here, and I get bored easily................."

I love that one.

SingleMom12 - you know if you're going to try and sneak in a link to your business at least try and make a comment that has something to do with the post. Just makeing a generic technically inaccurate statement that has the word gun in it is not going to work. To SPAM you go.
