We closed at 4 today. There will be a Range II, but smaller, further out. Thanks to North for a most creative way for all to celebrate. It was a day of change, happiness for the sale in these economic times. But a day also of sadness, some tears. Change is never easy. I loved the time at the Range when I first spotted it. It had everything I wanted house wise; a huge kitchen with an island/breakfast bar that was part of a huge open family room where I could chop and knead or sip wine with friends, all while viewing the outdoors or the big fireplace, cathedral ceilings, built in bookshelves, lots of windows, and a snug garage where I could have a reloading bench. Built in book shelves, a bedroom big enough for the humongous king size bed you almost needed a step to get into. . . .and a jacuzzi tub. The land was a lot smaller than I wanted, a little closer to the city than I wanted. It wasn't perfect but it had everything I wanted, and with only one months notice that I was being transferred here, not a lot of time to "shop" for the perfect home.
So I moved in, painted and polished and planted, using up a huge hunk of my savings, and most of my vacation time. At what point, I wonder, did the Range became a home, as much a part of me as my family? Maybe it started that first summer day I sat on the deck looking out on the pond, the Adirondack chair imprinting vertical lines onto my bare legs while a cool breeze blew in off the water. Perhaps the shift occurred when during a furious blizzard that first winter, when the power went out and my friends, already living in IND came by with warm coats, firewood, wine and food and we stayed up most of the night playing Dominoes while we waited for the heat to come back on.
But it's way too much house for just one person, and the city got closer and closer with new subdivisions popping up all around what was just corn when I moved in. It was time to downsize and move on to the cozy place that is more "me". So I spent the last two weeks packing what I could, selling or giving away what I didn't need. There's firearms. There's old family photos, a banged up RC airplane and a couple of incredibly raggedy stuffed animals, one missing an eye, their stuffing falling out, their limbs in need of some serious liposuction but loved, nonetheless, and for always. Barkley settled in surprisingly well to the new place, promptly staking a claim to the little bed in the guest room the sun started to set. He's happy to be around me, that's all that matters to him.
Now that I am gone, the deed signed over, my home will just return to being just a house. Like ex-lovers, I hope we can move on, remembering only the good times. And I hope its new owners will fall for its charms as much as I did. So it can be a home once more.

I'm so very very glad to hear this great news. Just what you deserve! Relax and enjoy your weekend. Take care of yourself!
Congratulations on closing the sale!
Congrats.
I've never had a home of my own.
So, my envy will be contained.
Take care and don't grin too much.
Well gosh. Big Congrats. And I hope Barkley is not the only one enjoying the new digs. One huge weight off the shoulders eh?
Gail (aka "The One Not To Be Trifled With"...) and I will hoist a nice single in about 1/2 hour in your honor.
More to follow...
Brigid,
It looks wonderful, warm, welcoming, and safe. I am very happy you are there. What a great life transition.

I owned a home like that. The first one that I chose because it was what I wanted. But I sold it, to move on to what I thought was something better. She wasn't.
Now I chose this one. It was rough, and needed a lot of work, but it was what I wanted. After seeing it for the third time, I told the real-estate agent that I liked it more every time I looked at it. And now, 9 months later, as I walk around my quiet neighborhood, I still don't see another house I like half as much.
You're right about Barkley. He'd sleep on a bed of nails. Just so long as he's with you. :)
Congratulations!
Just as cars on one plane are things to be bought and sold so are houses.
A "house" is clinical and sterile. A "home" is vastly different. People attach memories to both cars and houses. People bring both to life.
So I wish you the best on taking this step. I have been through many cars and some houses. You point out what makes both personal and in the end what is truly important.
A dog is always at home with the one he loves. It doesn't matter where. Glad you closed, nobody should carry that baggage for long.
You leave home
you move on
and you do the best you can ...
Congratulations selling in this market. The Range will always be a part of you.
Good to hear the painful part is over. Moving is way to much like work. Have a great weekend and try to unwind. Good luck with the search for the new range.
Congratulations on closing.
Barkley appears to be quite happy in the new digs.
Smile, I do believe the hardest part is over with. From here forwards, you're the buyer, not the seller, and now someone else has to impress YOU enough to buy their place.

CONGRATS!
Whoo-Hoo....party at Brigid's new place!!!
Whatever we put a piece of ourselves into becomes a part of who we are. It's not so much that we move as pick a new fork in the road. You might recognize the best advice I got when it was time for Lu and I to make that decision. It was from some redhead as I recall. What was her name?
Congratulations.
Barkley does look very comfortable.
Hopefully you find something you really like within the next year. Until then, enjoy not having to fix things if they break.
Don't really know your decorating preferences, but I know of very few people who actually like rental "everything beige" walls, carpeting, tile, etc. for long stays. However, beige does beat that awful hotel room color scheme photo you posted a while back.
Congrats on the sale!
May you find everything you need within the first two boxes you check!
Glad to see Barkley's settling in with enthusiasm. Hope you do, too, and find the perfect place and space for Range II.
Heartfelt congratulations from all of us, way up north. I hope it brings you peace while you search.
Glasses raised, toast drunk.

Congrats on the sale Brigid. And hopefully you find that place you're looking for, or worst case, can build it.
Settle in to the temp-home, and I'll raise something properly dark and tasty this evening to wish you luck.

Have a great weekend and congrats on closing.
I've come to enjoy your blog so much, as well as the helpful input re my gun, Thank You.
Good for you!
We shape our tools.
Our tools shape us.
Substitute the word home for tool.
I've been dwelling on this thought for a while now.
Very happy for you...and jealous...we have had a place on the market since the end of October, lowered the price once...next lowering will bring us back down to the barely break even point...not where I thought I would be after 6 years of ownership...
Congratulations.
Congrats on the sale!
When I bought the Refuge the wife was worried that I would get a little house with a huge garage, and instead I got a 4 bedroom with no garage. Then the kids moved back in and filled up the bedrooms, so I didn't even have a place for my trains!
Next house is going to be 2 bedrooms, tops, with a really big garage, and the spare bedroom is going to be filled with trains!
I feel your pain/joy. The kids and I recently went thru the same thing and emotions. We had a little acreage on the edge of a very little town. Old farmhouse with a barn and garage and such, but it got to be too much and with the economic 'downturn' we downsized into an apartment in the burbs. It's just a place to hang ouur coats and lie our heads (and store the firearms) Now we have more time/money to get out and enjoy what life has to offer, and save up for that 'cabin in the woods'. Like Barkley, my children miss the old place, but am happy just to be where they are loved.
Congrats on the sale and a smooth move.
Glad to hear that the sale went through without issues.
Hope you find 'the perfect place' for you in the very near future.
Congrats Ms Brigid,
Please don't be scarce, your writings are so beautiful, they never fail to uplift my spirits. God bless Ya
The Range became home, not when the breezes shifted past nor when the winter shivered through, but as the osmosis of joy, pain, love and life sifted your spirits together. Call it life-mosis.
Thanks for sharing those gifts with us.
Congrats on the Sale!! I am very happy for you!
Glad the Range finally sold... Now on to bigger (er... smaller) and better things! I know that is a load off the mind and pocketbook.
Money goes a long way in LaGrange County Indiana these days...but you'd better have it when you come, cause you won't make much up here. Lots of GREAT cooks and GUN lovers too! C'mon up!
I wish we could talk you into a tidy ranch here but I know it might feel like going backwards...
No matter - I am so happy you've taken the first step and I cannot wait to see what you design for your future home. Congrats!!
Congratulations on closing, and good luck on finding the next Range. We continue to waffle up here - should we stay or should go? Love this home, good neighbors, good area - hate seeing each other only on weekends. Other unrelated issues, too. Was joking with my Honey - sometimes I wish I had a crystal ball, but I'm afraid of what I would see.
Congratulations on the sale, Dr. B. It's a good feeling to have the albatross of a real estate sale lifted.

Home. Sigh.
God bless dogs. Especially black Labs.

Did you remember to pack Larry the Lion? I hope he's keeping watch over you in your new abode. I hope the move brings far more benefit than regret.
Chris
Small house is easier to defend, big shop is GOOD, mo' land is mo'betta! You did a real nice job on all the improvements, hope that helped along the way to sale...
