It's Whose Birthday?

Based on a crowd of strangers standing around my table singing, I guess it's mine.

Today's the day, but I had to work and it was out of town. Squirrel games.

But last night there was about 15 hours off duty. So M., my squirrel back up, fetched me from my hotel room about supper time.

Where are we going?

Samurai Delicatessen!

You see, when I was a little girl, on our birthdays we got to eat in a restaurant. Eating out was a big treat in the late 60's, not something people do several times a week. The birthday person picked the place, cost was not a concern. It was our gift along with one other present to open. We kids all picked this Japanese restaurant an hour away in the city. It was very authentic with the tables about a foot off the floor and the waitresses dressed in kimono costumes.

But you didn't kneel, there was a big hole under the table so you sat on cushions and dangled our legs after leaving our shoes at the door. We were in our own little private dining room with shoji screens around and sweet smelling tatami mats on the floor. Soft stringed instruments played quietly.Silent, beutiful women who looked like grown up fairy girls to me, would bring out fragrant hot towels to wipe our hands. Then in colorful little bowls there were all sorts of wonderful little foods (tempura shrimp!) and chopsticks which could also double as swords. Food we never had at home, where cuisine was Norwegian or Scot/Irish meat and potatoes. As much of that cuisine has been classified as a sedative by the FDA, trying something new was an adventure for we little ones. I'd mentioned this tradition to M. one time when we were probably staking out a cinnamon donut and he remembered.

Ahhh. Adult beverages.

Tempura!

Back at my hotel we had a shot of Jamesons at the restaurant lounge downstairs and a toast to a lot of adventures and more to come. When I went to go to the bathroom and came back, about 15 young people who had been sitting in the restaurant area having drinks suddenly came over to our table and sang Happy Birthday to me, making a quite talented Broadway show style performance out of it. I turned bright red and clapped and M. thanked them, pointing at me saying, "Hard to believe she she used to be a pole dancer!" The girls all then told me I still looked awesome while I turned even more red.

But no pole dancing career or not, it really made me laugh, though I did remind M. I was normally armed.

This morning, not too early, back to work, he off on something else and myself heading home on an airliner for days off. Thanks to all of you for all the well wishes, the phone calls, the cards and the emails. Tomorrow I'm headed up to Midwest Chick and Mr. B's home for the weekend (and no one better jump out of a cake!)

Tonight, it's just Barkley and I, with some quiet music (Stan Getz playing "Alfie") and memories of good times gone by. Thoughts of fingers on soft stringed instruments, the pace and heartbeat of life on another side of the world, always on my mind.

Happy Birthday again! Glad you enjoyed the e-card and hope you have a fantastic weekend.

"Hard to believe she she used to be a pole dancer!". Enquiring minds want to know more about that. :-)

Happy Birthday to you. Wishing you a pleasant night.

Hat Trick - there was NO Pole! A Russian once, maybe.

M. like friends and big brothers everywhere, likes to tease me.

You have a happy birthday yourself! I'll talk to you soon.

Happy Birthday B!

I don't comment all that much but I'm always reading. Hope you got that little extra touch of joy on your day. I'm thinking we may be related. Aren't squirrels and groundhogs like cousins or something???

Well done to your Squirrel Backup. If he keeps this up, you might consider upgrading his nickname.

;-)

Happy Birthday, Brigid!

P.S. I'm far too much older than you to try one of those Russian Cossack dances, although once in Tokyo at Karaoke night with the local lads I did try out "Domo Arigato, Mr. Robato." Wonder if your Samurai restaurant has a good rendition?

Brigid,

Funny post! It does appear you had a fun evening, as well you should on your birthday.

But, a Russian? I can understand, I guess. Poles are hard to come by.

Happy Birthday! Glad you had fun. Did your face match your hair?

Ah, male coworkers, no matter how well trained they appear to be, there is always a bit of a rascal that appears when they open their mouths. (They sometimes even surprise themselves, then they blush and apologize. The trick is to accept the apology without laughing too much. So funny.)

Kudos to M. Not just every man would show a gal such a good time for her 28th (or so) B-day. Happy birthday Brigid.

Thank you all! Official Birthday was quiet, candles, a small jigger of scotch, music and quiet time at home before heading out in the a.m. for BFW (Big Fun Weekend).

Harrison Ford forgot to call AGAIN.

And we have matching hats.

If you base your age on looks, you're 34-36. If you base your age on experience, you're about 108.

Harrison Ford WISHES he could get his hands on the 36 year old.

I'd hold out for Jean Reno. He can appreciate the experience.

Og - seeing as how you've seen me at 4 am crawling out of my sleeping bag at deer camp I'll take that as a wonderful compliment. Thanks!

Laura - M's a black belt. I don't worry too much about ninjas when we are in the field.

It's Good to be the Queen - Thank you. And Welcome.

dakotared - It was a nice sip, and then a nice long sleep.

With that, I need to pack up gun gear and Barkley and I need to get in the truck and get going.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words.

Happy Birthday!

Must be a great back up, if he can get away with things like that!

..I didn't think it counted as a pole when the metal tube had wings, and all the audience was belted down inside it, unable to see you. Does maneuvering around t-storms count as dancing?

Hope you and Barkley have a great weekend!

LauraB said...

Oh, Og! I never thought of that but wouldn't Reno be the perfect one? HA! Good on ya!

Happy Birthday. Pole dancing hmm, need a small .22 or its going to get in the way. Hurts less too when it is flung off.
