Saturday Night Music - Nothing Else Matters

Barkley and I arrived at Mr. B's and Midwest Chicks for Birthday Part Deux. I will leave you with a song until I get home (from the Ipod Nano they got me for my birthday loaded with many of my favorite songs.)

Which includes this one. Nothing Else Matters. Metallica plays with the San Francisco Orchestra (S and M).

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

You all have a good night wherever you are - Brigid and Barkley

Brigid,

Glad you made the journey safely and are having a GREAT time with good friends. AWESOME tune. I could sing it, but it would sound like Popeye duking it out with Brutus. If you play the song backwards, you clearly hear the word "spinach". It's a code, I tell you!

You continue to surprise me. Hadn't figured you for a Metallica fan.

Hope you continue to enjoy your weekend.

Interesting fact, this song is a perfect waltz. I have friends that regularly participate in ballroom dancing who filled me in. Watching a full dance floor, all in full ballroom dress, waltzing to Metallica was quite entertaining.

The only think better than a birthday, is a birthday that continues to run through the weekend. Thanks for posting that version of the song, I hadn't heard it before...if you like that you should give the Kiss Symphony stuff a shot...they recorded it a few years ago with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

"preloaded with about 7.1 GB of my favorite songs"

That inspired me to tally up the hard drive space used by all of the music on my media server. Between the music that the lovely Mrs North has and the music I have, we have well over 350 gig of music. I say well over because that is just the CDs transferred on to the server. We also digitized all of our LPs and cassettes, too.

We can listen to music without repeats for days on end. But still we buy more music.

Recently, as inspired by you, some good jazz.

Enjoy your iDevice!

NICE!!! you can call it what you want, label it as you see fit, but music is music, and I LOVE the fact that such seemingly disparate tastes can collaborate.

My 11-year old daughter is a HUGE fan of Taylor Swift. We just loooove watching a DVD of Taylor (and her band) playing with Def Leppard. What a mix.............

Country. Pop. Rock. Metal. Hair. Guitars. Drums. It's all music.

Chords, Keys, Notes, do not understand so-called boundaries, and it is all good.

Again, I say NICE!!!!

Great video, and happy birthday.

On the subject of metal bands playing with orchestras, over on YouTube there is vidio of the Scorpions playing with the Berliner Philharmonic... ;-)

Love this song, this one and "Wherever I May Roam" off of the same album.

More musical reflections... plus an offer to share playlists. But foremost, some recommendations not seen on your playlist.

Steve Morse. Favorite stuff dates me to his Dixie Dregs days; in addition to Gallery of the Greats chops, his writing exhibits uncommon song structure. Listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9iyPDhNi68 for an example.

Eric Johnson. Great chops, Texas-style. And the opener to one of my playlists with what sounds to me like one of the Best Recorded acoustic tracks evah! See http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=song+for+george&aq=f for the live tune; listen to the album for the awesome studio version. Soooo much depth.

My playlists are also dominated by a literate trio whose anthem for me (and all guitarists!) was the Ayn Rand-inspired album-side written by the Ghost Rider author.

Another player worth looking into is John Petrucci. I admit to a polarized perspective. In the fold of his band, I have trouble listening. But in other experiments, I enjoy works like Glasgow Kiss and Universal Mind. Just the old' metal head in me, I guess... (Small world: Interesting to find that they covered a Dixie Dregs tune; listen to the original, as the cover does not capture the violin quite right.)

And, in closing, among the many faces of Steve Morse, check Major Impacts 1&2. Lyric-free original stylistic covers. One of my faves features not only one the chunky rhythm-lead style from the Blue Flames but also a masterful backwards segment and more.
