On Governing

"The major problem - one of the major problems, for there are several - one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.

To summarize:  it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.  To summarize the summary:  anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.  To summarize the summary of the summary:  people are a problem."

 - Douglas Adams The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Chapter 28, Paragraph 1 & 2)

  1. I've always felt that people who WANT to manage everybody else are the problem.

  2. Hence the observation, "Is THAT the best you can do?"

Part of the problem is that candidates are put on the microscope. Picked your nose in second will come out in the media.

So we get ciphers who do not release their transcripts or flat, pale, 2-D candidates...or candidates who are pushed by their parties regardless of their baggage because, well, everybody is compromised.

    Great post.

  3. I find it very interesting that so many truisms are found in Science Fiction.....

  4. Wanting to govern (to CONTROL) is ipso facto evidence of a mental defect.
Look at everyone who ever did it - Popes, Presidents, dictators.
    I rest my case.

  5. I once read a short sci fi story about the Presidential selection process. The author proposed that anyone who wants the job is automatically disqualified. The new President would be chosen from a pool of qualified candidates by random computer selection. If they do a good job, they'd be allowed to leave after only one term. :)

  6. Ditto to all the above. God help us.

  7. Truer words have never been spoken.

  8. I believe that Lazarus Long chimed in on this matter also.

I started this blog so the child I gave up for adoption could get to know me, and in turn, her children, as well as share stories for a family that lives too far away. So please keep it friendly and kid safe. Posts that are only a link or include an ad for an unknown business automatically to to SPAM..
