One Hundred Men

Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there,
eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters,
and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle.
Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.

  1. You make me think on Thucydides, who said that the society that distinguishes between its warriors and its scholars will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.

No distinction with you, that's for sure.

  2. Well said! What's the rifle? Sorry, my long gun game is just getting up to speed.

  3. Borepatch - thanks. I'll give you a call on the phone when I get home to catch up.

Keads - the photo is about 4 or 5 years old and is a Mauser, I believe.

  4. Well said :-) Heard a number of variations over the years, but they ALL boil down to the same thing...

  5. "SLAM" Marshal found that after WWII, most soldiers didn't even fire their weapons in combat.

Training has changed, and the percentage is better, but the principle is the same.

  6. I recall the words that were spoken in "300" that gave meaning to the sacrifice made by the Spartans -

" Remember us." As simple an order as a king can give. "Remember why we died." For he did not wish tribute, nor song, nor monuments nor poems of war and valor. His wish was simple.

"Remember us," he said to me. That was his hope, should any free soul come across that place, in all the countless centuries yet to be. May all our voices whisper to you from the ageless stones, "Go tell the Spartans, passerby, that here by Spartan law, we lie."

  7. As a farmer once told me... when the SHTF... your character is determined by whether you run toward the fan... or run away from the sh...

Hope you're travels are going well...

  8. I've not been able to verify the source. The net attributes it in several places to Heraclitus. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

  9. "One man in a thousand, Solomon says, will stick more close than a brother...
But the Thousandth Man will stand by your side, to the gallows foot, and after!"

  10. I have no idea why this quote means so much to me....but it does.

I started this blog so the child I gave up for adoption could get to know me, and in turn, her children, as well as share stories for a family that lives too far away.
