As those of you who visit regularly know - The Book of Barkley sales goes to animal rescue/welfare/education groups, with over 2000 books sold to date, helping dozens of organizations across the United States.
But I have a special place in my heart for Labrador Retrievers and Lab mixes (like Abby the rescue) and will do a focused sales for lab groups on a quarterly basis. For the first ten days in February all sales of The Book of Barkley will go to LABMED, based in Plano, Texas.
My periodontist and his wife (also a periodontist) have a wonderful 3 legged member of their household who was gravely injured after falling out of a truck bed and being hit by a car. It was only with the volunteer services of folks like LABMED, that their wonderful pet received the lifesaving care that saved her life even if it couldn't save her leg. But that allowed her to be placed in a loving forever home. After hearing their pet's story and meeting Deb. H - one of LABMED's volunteers and coordinators from nearby, I knew I had to do something extra to highlight this group.
Please consider a purchase of The Book of Barley from Feb. 1 through 10, or simply a direct donation to Lab Med. They also have an online store where you can buy great toys for your pet, with the profits supporting that group.
LABMED (www.labmed.org) was founded in 1996. Helping rescued Labradors or Lab mixes in need of medical attention to make them healthy so they can be adopted is their mission. LABMED is an Internet-based non-profit organization created to distribute financial aid to injured or ill rescues around the country, giving them a second chance at adoption and love from a permanent family. The idea for this organization started because of one dog, Buddy. You can find his story here: http://www.labmed.org/buddy.html
Visit their site and read about some of their success stories. Each of these dogs has faced the loss of his or her home as well as painful injuries and medical treatments. In spite of their pain, these wonderful dogs have exhibited the gentle, loving disposition so typical of Labs.
Giving dogs like these a second chance is what LABMED is all about. LABMED has funded 1328 dogs since their inception in 1996 but more applications are always in the works. Like all non-profits, they depend on donors and fundraising events in order to have funds available to help the rescuers who apply for assistance from us. They are unique in that They have no overhead due to being an all internet based organization and all their board members and officers are volunteers so every penny donated truly does go to help the dogs. LABMED is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization which gives their supporters the ability to claim any donation amount on their federal income tax. Please consult your tax preparation advisor for more specific information.
